Dear Loretta:
You won't remember me, but I met you many years ago when Jim was my graduate advisor at OSU. I had been thinking about Jim just recently and how blessed I was to have had him as my advisor. I met Jim when he was consulting with my employer HNB about establishing a corporate university. One day Jim invited me to lunch, encouraged me to purse my desire to earn a Masters degree in the field of learning and development, and offered to be my advisor and to help me tailor a degree program that would support my desire to make a career in the field. Jim's support changed my life. I'll never forget him, and I'll be eternally grateful for his guidance and help.
I'll keep you and your family in my prayers for peace and comfort at this sad time.

Jim was a great advisor, mentor, leader, and friend who influenced my career more than anyone could have imaged. He taught me so much, and showed me “what the kid really needed.” I have so many fond "Buffer Stories, Sayings, & Memories" that always make me smile. He was also a friend to my family and I will always cherish those memories. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Thank you Lord for allowing us to have been blessed with our brother in the Lord, James J. Buffer, Jr. All I knew of James was what I knew of him as a father, when I was so very young. He loved his sons as a father should - stern in correction and comforting in love. Of such fatherhood, one could find no other better example. What little I knew I grew to love and with such, I raised my own - stern in correction and comforting in love, as I know Our Father in Heaven is comforting him now. God Bless and comfort you all during this time and always.

So sorry to learn of Jim’s passing. We fondly recall sitting for your children in November 1973(?) when you and Dr. Buffer were interviewing for a new position. Since it was our birthdays in November you provided a steak for dinner for us. We have wonderful memories of our time at OSU and the department family. Dr. Buffer was a wonderful mentor to me and our cohort of 13 Ph. D students. I am sorry I didn’t know you were in Ft. Meyers as we have owned a home in Forest Glen GGC in Naples since 2005. I retired in 2012 from The College of New Jersey. We pray for all of God’s Blessings on you and your entire family. In His Service. John and Sue Karsnitz
