I am saddened to hear of Gretchen’s passing. Gretchen was my photographic mentor at the University of Connecticut and guided me through a very time-consuming project to celebrate 100 years of women studying at UConn. During our time together and continuing friendship, I looked forward to meeting with her and learning so much in the process. She was such a skilled artist and so thoughtful. She kept calm in every storm and exuded a sense of normalcy during difficult times in my life. Visiting her in Chicago when she was there, was one of my favorite memories and I will miss her greatly. My condolences to her children. Such a loss.

Oh, how much we all have lost! We are saddened to hear this news and remember all the good times together. We have been given the gift of Gretchen's artistry and benefited from her scholarship, but more than anything....we have enjoyed her friendship, wisdom and sense of humor. We send our love to Helen and Laura.

I was a student at SXC from 1976-1980 where Gretchen was an important mentor, inspiring teacher and became a close friend. I remember her as a perfectionist with high standards that I still tell my students about, (I think I probably protested at the time but am so grateful for now!) her sense of discipline was always coupled with a caring and warmth. I also learned so much from the sense of camaraderie the faculty had, they were a great team. We remained in contact throughout the years and it was so amazing that she later became department head at UConn where I teach, to be able to work with my mentor. I enjoyed being in regular contact by email with her throughout the years and some visits, particularly after she moved to Columbus where I first taught. She made important contributions to the history of photography through her own work and books.

Peace and ease to Gretchen, as well as to her lovely family at this time. So nice to read an obituary of such an artful and accomplished woman. Thinking of you all as you comfort each other and reflect on her life.

Gretchen was a dear friend for many decades. Her artistic vision, especially her nature photography, was an inspiration to me. I learned much from her photography and her research and writing. Ever the teacher, she was always ready to view, critique, and offer insightful and useful comments on my video work, too. She was a member of my long term book group, a colleague of mine at Grand Valley State University, and most important, my friend. I will miss her. I recently moved, and the only artwork I hung on my new walls is one of hers - a study of a birch tree. I see it every day. Condolences to her family. Condolences to us friends.
