Thomas (Tom) J. Schlueb passed away May 16, 2022. Born in 1936 to Harold J. and Helen R. Schlueb. Preceded in death by wife of 53 years, Carole; parents; brothers James (Mary Jane) and Harold (Garnet) and sisters Dorothy and Mildred; sister-in-law Marilyn Spires and brother-in-law Ted Spires. Survived by daughters Terri (Charlie) Schwallie and Kathleen (Joe) Garber of Columbus; Laurie (Chuck) Wayland of Missoula and son Matt (Julianne) Schlueb of Pittsburgh. Grandfather of Savannah and Theo Schwallie; Sam, Alex and Logan Garber; Oskar and Olin Schlueb; and Spencer and Levi Wayland. Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Attended Corpus Christi School for grades 1-10 and St. Charles High School for 11-12. Earned a B.A. from St. Charles Borromeo College and attended the Athenium of Ohio for 3.5 years. Earned a B.S. and M.A. at The Ohio State University.
Taught at the Ohio Juvenile Diagnostic Center and was hired by the Columbus City Schools in 1963 to teach American history at Central High School. Was later a guidance counselor at Central and Walnut Ridge High Schools. Entered administration as Vice Principal at Franklin Middle School and became Principal at Centennial High School (1979-89) and served as Principal at Brookhaven High School (1989-1994). Honored as “Educator of the Year” in 1982, 1983 and 1990.
Active member of Christ the King Catholic Church and served as cantor, lector, eucharistic minister, parish council vice president and vice president of parish St. Vincent de Paul. Enjoyed volunteering at the Bishop Griffin Food Pantry. Was member and director of the Corpus Christi Men’s Choir, Mt. St. Mary Seminary Choir and St. Francis Xavier Men’s Glee Club.
Appreciated and enjoyed his nine grandchildren, fishing, golf, hunting, gardening, cooking and being a Mr. Fix-It. Believed in the motto Carpe Diem. Spent many years playing Euchre with the Allweins, Altmans, Beckmans, Botts, Byrnes, Felkners, Hosfelds, Murphys, Thurns and Schmidts.
Traveled with Carole in their RV to 49 states and Canada. Attributed any successes to Carole; his mother and father, Helen and Harold; and friends (both occupationally and socially). He and Carole celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary before her passing in 2017.
Calling hours from 4-7 pm on Thursday, May 26 at Egan-Ryan Funeral Home, 403 E. Broad Street where a Rosary will begin at 7 pm. The family would appreciate those attending wear masks for others who are vulnerable. Mass of Christian Burial at 11am on Friday, May 27 at Christ the King Church, 2777 East Livingston Avenue with burial immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society in care of Christ the King Church at 2777 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus, OH 43209.
