Susan (Schwarm) Maag, beloved daughter of Lois (Hothem) Gilhousen & Paul Gilhousen of Bakersville/Baltic, Ohio, and of her biological father, Doyle Schwarm, passed away surrounded by the love of her family. A devoted mother, grandmother, educator, and friend, Susan’s life was marked by kindness, curiosity, and joyful enthusiasm.
Born on February 28, 1949, Susan spent her childhood and formative years in Lakewood, Ohio, where her deep love of learning began. As an adult, she made her home in Columbus, Ohio, where she built both her family and her life’s work.
Susan is survived by her daughter, Laura (Maag) Manner; son-in-law, John Manner; and her cherished grandchildren, Quincy and Vivian, who brought immeasurable joy and pride to her life.
Susan devoted over 40 years to the Ohio Department of Youth Services, serving as an English teacher, principal, reading specialist, and in various leadership and administrative roles. She was known for her patience, compassion, and unwavering belief in the potential of every student she taught and supported.
Those who knew Susan will remember her bright, joyful spirit and her love for life’s simple pleasures: Disney, well done hamburgers, shopping trips, and, above all, her enduring passion for education. She adored wearing her marcasite jewelry and never passed up a chance to dance or be silly. Teaching was not only her profession but her calling, and she filled every classroom and conversation with warmth and encouragement.
Susan’s legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, the lessons she taught, and the family she adored. She will be remembered for her humor, her generosity, and the unwavering love she gave so freely. Her family will forever hold her in their hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 7, from 12:00–3:00 PM at the Worthington Rusty Bucket, 7800 Olentangy River Rd, Columbus, OH 43235. Family and friends are warmly invited to join in remembering Susan and celebrating the joy she brought to so many.
