Susan Cross Obituary

Susan M. (Fleming) Cross, slept peacefully away at her home after a long and brave battle with stage four cancer on March 18, 2022. Sue was born on April 6, 1967 in Columbus to Thomas M. IV, and Virginia Leslie (Fleetwood) Fleming of Lancaster, OH. Sue was a 1985 Fisher Catholic High School graduate where she played percussion in the marching band and a 1990 Ohio University BSEd Graduate. On July 25, 1992 Sue married Thomas R. Cross at Saint Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, Granville, Ohio. They shared almost thirty years of marriage. Sue worked as a paraoptometric and optician first at NorthWest Vison Center, Columbus; then EyeCare Professionals of Powell; and Powell Vision Center. Throughout her long career in the eye care profession, she made many friends due to the compassionate and helpful care she gave to each patient. Sue was a member of Capriccio Columbus Choir, where she formed many strong friendships and shared the excitement of performing at Carnegie Hall. In addition to her love of music, Sue was known as a wonderful hostess and an amazing cook.  She had a love of reading and art as well. Her greatest passion was her family and friends and her furry companion, Jack the Beagle. In addition to her parents and husband, Sue will be sadly missed by her brother, Thomas M. V, and Maggie Fleming of Pittsburgh, PA. and their children, Emily Fleming of Charleston, SC, and Thomas Michael VI of Pittsburgh, PA.; Uncle and Aunt Richard and Marilynn Fleetwood of Chestertown, MD; cousins Josh and Lauren (Fleetwood) Hentz and their son, Asher of Cordova, MD; cousin Creg Fleetwood and his children Clay and Olive of Chestertown, MD; Brother and Sister – in – law Dr. David and Mary (Cross) McFarland of Lake Charles, LA; Brother and Sister – in – law Keith and Laura (Cross) Chapman of Athens, OH; niece and nephew Julia Chapman and Tim Carroll of Philadelphia, PA; Nephew Douglas Chapman of Sacramento, CA, and close friend from childhood, Linda Halderman Pilcher and her husband John Pilcher, and their daughters Katherine and Elyse Pilcher of Worthington, OH. Sue was proceeded in death by her paternal grandparents Thomas M. III and Mary (Domitrovitch) Fleming; maternal grandparents Robert and Helen Clair (Cregar) Fleetwood, her aunt Barbara Fleming, her father and mother – in – law, Roy J. and Phyllis LaVelle Cross of Athens, OH; sister-in-law Sarah Cross of Hilliard; and her cousin Jetty Fleetwood of Chestertown, MD. The family wishes to thank the Zangmeister Cancer Center of Columbus for the outstanding and compassionate care they provided during Sue’s illness. Egan – Ryan Funeral Home will do a caring cremation and Mass of Christian Burial and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date with burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Athens.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or The Humane Society.
