Dominican Sister of Peace Maxine Shonk, OP, died at the congregational Motherhouse in Columbus, OH, on June 13, 2024. Sr. Maxine was born on October 4, 1943, in Lancaster, OH and in 1962 entered the Congregation of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Sr. Maxine earned her bachelor’s degree in education from St. Mary of the Springs College, master’s degree in religious studies from Providence College, R.I., Master’s Degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, Chicago, and Certification in Spiritual Direction from the Institute for Spiritual Leadership.
She taught in Catholic elementary and secondary schools in Columbus, Newark, and Steubenville, OH and in New Haven, CT. She was Adjunct Professor of Theology at Ohio Dominican University. She served as Pastoral Associate at several parishes in the Diocese of Columbus, including Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Grove City, St. James the Less in Columbus, OH, and most recently at St. Pius X Church in Reynoldsburg. She served as Administrator of the Spirituality Network in Columbus and did retreat work and spiritual direction in Ohio and Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents Earl J. and Bernardine Tooill Shonk, her brothers: Bernard, Philip, Theodore and Lawrence and her sisters-in-law: Betty, Joyce and Regina. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Jane (Leo) Thimmes, her brothers and sisters-in-law: James, David, Mark, John (Kathy), Thomas (Debbie), Dr. Richard (Susan), Christopher, and Kevin (Karen), and her sisters-in-law: Phyllis and Sharon.
A private vigil of remembrance for Dominican Sisters, Associates and Family will be held on July 1, 2024, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel, Columbus, OH.
A funeral liturgy will be held at St. Pius X Church in Reynoldsburg, OH at 10:30 AM on July 2, 2024, with Visitation beginning at 9:30 AM at the church. The burial will take place at a later date.
