Dominican Sister of Peace, Sister Irene Eckerman died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH on February 20, 2024. She was born in 1928 in Akron OH and in 1945 entered the Dominican Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
Sr. Irene earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from St. John’s College in Cleveland, OH and completed post-graduate studies at Kent State University and Siena Heights College. She served as a teacher in Akron, Alliance and Barberton OH, and served as a Pastoral Associate in Phoenix and as an RCIA director and coordinator of Religious Education at Mt. Carmel Church in Tempe, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Catherine Steinbach Eckerman, her brothers, Joseph Eckerman and Reverend Felix Eckerman,and her sisters Victoria Foley and Cecelia Barich. She is survived by her sisters Mary Kay Goodley and Terry Falter.
A vigil of remembrance will be held at 4:45 PM on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel.
The funeral liturgy will be held at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel at 9:30 AM on Friday, March 1, 2024. Burial will follow at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron OH. Funeral services in the Columbus area are by Egan-Ryan Funeral Home.
