Sandra Jean Mundy passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025 after bravely battling a variety of illnesses for the previous few months. She was born on September 18, 1949 in Toledo, Ohio, the first daughter of Junior and LaVerne Steindam. She grew up in Genoa, Ohio and graduated from Genoa High School in 1967. After graduating, she came to Central Ohio and developed a love for traveling, living in Germany before moving back and working for The State of Ohio in downtown Columbus. She met her future husband Michael Irvine before attending local art classes, where she discovered her longtime love for calligraphy. She would go on to become a successful in-demand calligrapher, eventually starting her own business, Sandy Mundy Lettering. She became an active member of The Columbus Calligraphy Guild and served in multiple officer roles over the years. Her passion for calligraphy led her to study under many local and world-renowned calligraphers, often developing long and lasting friendships in that community. Wanting to share her love of calligraphy with others, she went on to teach it to hundreds of students of all ages at many programs and centers all around Central Ohio. She especially enjoyed her time teaching local Japanese students, forming deep and lasting bonds with many of the students she taught. She is preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her younger sister Brenda Steindam, her husband of over 40 years, Michael Irvine, her son Travis (Irvine) and daughter Emily (Irvine) as well as their beloved family cat. In lieu of flowers, her family asks for donations to be made to the National Kidney Foundation. A celebration of her life, letters and legacy will be held at a later date.
