Robert Dunham Obituary

Robert James Dunham, known lovingly as Bob, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 87.

Bob was born on October 12, 1938, in New York, New York. He was the oldest son of the late Robert and Dorothy Dunham, who along with Bob’s younger sister Marilyn have welcomed him into heaven. Throughout his life he carried with him the values of hard work, faith, and devotion to family. He was a kind, loving, and generous man who brought warmth and joy to those around him.

Bob graduated from PS 11 in New York City and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  He attended New York Community College and then finished his education by graduating from Ohio University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1963. He was a proud Ohio Bobcat and could often be found wearing an OU hat or attire, that always sparked a conversation. After graduation, Bob went on to build a long and respected career with Johnson Controls, where he worked for 42 years. His professional life was marked by loyalty, diligence, and a strong sense of responsibility. He was admired by colleagues for his dependable nature and his thoughtful approach to both work and relationships. His steady presence and integrity reflected the same qualities that shaped every part of his life.

A Catholic man, Bob lived his faith through his actions, his words, and the way he cared for others. He valued family above all else and was most content when surrounded by the people he loved. He shared nearly 62 devoted years of marriage with his beloved wife, Elizabeth, and together they built a life centered on love, support, and enduring commitment. Their partnership was a beautiful example of devotion and mutual respect, and it was the foundation of a family that brought Bob immense joy and pride.

He is survived by Elizabeth; his children, James Dunham, Joanne Engler and her husband, Jeff, Timothy Dunham and his wife, Julie, and Mary Auch and her husband, Andy; and his ten cherished grandchildren, Ellie, Jay (Maura), Harrison, Wyatt, and Drew Engler; Gabrielle Mayo (Jonathan), Tanner and Pierson Dunham;  Madeleine and Audrey Auch as well as four great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his younger brother, Gene Dunham and his wife, Patty. Bob treasured each member of his family and took great delight in their accomplishments, their company, and the many memories they created together over the years.

Bob had a lifelong love of music and found great happiness in sharing that love with others. He was a proud member of the Singing Buckeyes men’s barbershop group, served as a Cantor at mass for several years and also participated in Vaud-Villities. He especially enjoyed the Friday morning singing group at Bexley House, where he gathered with friends, sang and played his baritone ukulele. These musical friendships were among the many joys in his life, and they reflected his natural gift for fellowship and his ability to make others feel welcome and uplifted.

In addition to music, Bob enjoyed golf and tennis, and traveling with Elizabeth and their groups of cherished friends. After his retirement in 2004, Bob & Elizabeth enjoyed annual trips, often to European countries, where they made incredible memories together. He appreciated the simple pleasures of time spent in good company. Whether on the course, on the court, traveling, or singing among friends, he approached life with enthusiasm and a generous spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to his family and friends.

Bob’s life was one of faith, love, and steadfast devotion. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and deep affection for those closest to him. Though he is no longer with us, the example he set and the love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
