The family of Matthew S. McMasters is saddened to announce that he has left us to join the angels in heaven after a heroic fight with cancer on Thursday, May 29, 2025. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Rosalie, he leaves behind his four siblings and their children: sister Rosemary and her son David, brother Kevin, his wife Deborah and their daughters Christine and Carol, brother Christopher and his daughter Meagan and her wife Lyndsey, and brother Timothy.
He was an active member and peer leader in the AA fellowship for 27 years. He touched hundreds of lives in support of the message of hope and serenity. He was frequently asked to be a meeting lead and was honored on his 25th anniversary when invited to lead a meeting in Galway, Ireland. The support of the fellowship was his life's vocation and the community where he made many friends who he loved as family.
His passion, however, was the game of golf. He pursued excellence in the sport with all he had to give. He was rewarded with wins, travel, and lifelong friends who he treasured. The last six years of his career was serving as director of maintenance at Brookside Country Club where occupation and passion joined to make it one of the happiest times of his life. To work with colleagues and friends who shared the same commitment for service excellence to the members, and the sport, was the pinnacle of success in his opinion. He played at many fine courses in this country and the UK, but there wasn't one that he believed had any more to offer than the Brookside Club, which he considered "home." He was also given the privilege of teaching and coaching the game to teens, which he enjoyed immensely. He relished their success and passion for the game.
A man of faith, it was a subtle under-current in his life supporting his sobriety, relationships, and strength. It was a guiding principle as he made decisions about his last days with us and brought great comfort to him. Additionally, it provided a vehicle to ferret out the "best." Memory is a way of holding on to someone you love and never want to lose. We hold Matthew's memory in our hearts until we meet him again. He was a child of God and in a world of mortals, he was a wonder.
