Mary Lou Pelzer Obituary

Mary Lou Pelzer, 83, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2024 in Columbus. She was born February 24, 1941, to the late John and Marcelline (nee Hassett) Hannon. She was loved deeply by her family – husband of 52 years, Dan Pelzer, and the couple's children and spouses, Marci Pelzer and James LeDuc and John and Amy Pelzer. Mary Lou cherished time with her grandchildren, Sarah, Lauren and Owen Pelzer, and was beloved by her brothers Tom Hannon and Pete (Linda) Hannon and her late sisters, Alice Marie Hannon and Bee Jay (late Pat) McGreal. A joyful social butterfly, Mary Lou relished time spent with numerous nieces and nephews, former students and treasured friends.

Mary Lou was born in Cleveland where she attended Our Lady of the Angels, St. Augustine Academy and Ursuline College. She delighted in the memories and lifelong multigenerational friendships cultivated as a camper and counselor at CYO Camp Isaac Jogues. After earning a master’s degree at Ohio University and staying home during her children’s early years in Columbus, she taught third grade at Immaculate Conception, singing every CYO camp song with her students. She was an active member of St. Philip parish and an enthusiastic volunteer for every one of her children’s activities.

Mary Lou and Dan moved to the Villas at St. Therese when it opened in1999 and she moved across campus to Mother Angeline McCrory Manor in 2021. True to her lifelong sense of mischief, Mary Lou informed every visitor that McCrory was a temporary arrangement, at one point attempting to bust out in her wheelchair. Dan visited her every day.

We will celebrate Mary Lou’s life at Mother Angeline McCrory Manor, 5199 East Broad Street on Wednesday, April 17th, with visitation at 9:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the following causes are appreciated: Catholic Charities (please note designation to summer camp experiences) 1404 E. 9th St., Cleveland, OH 44114 and Kinship Community Food Center 2610 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., Milwaukee, WI 53212.
