Mary Catherine Gibbons, age 74, passed away in her home on Sunday, March 9th , 2025. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Margaret Gibbons, and by her uncles Joseph Flanagan, and Fr. Francis Flanagan.
She is survived by her brother, Michael and his wife Patricia, her niece Erin Gibbons, nephew Michael Gibbons, and his wife Alexa, as well as by her great nephew Jack, her cousins Craig Flanagan and Cristine Goodman, and by her dear friend, Christina McGilton, and by numerous other family members and friends.
Mary Catherine grew up in the Franklinton neighborhood of Columbus. She was baptized and attended grade school at Holy Family Parish, where she came to admire the good Sisters of Mercy who taught there. She later graduated from Bishop Ready High School, Class of 1968. After graduation she entered the convent of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus in North Columbus. She served the order of sisters in various roles, one of which was to care for the elderly sisters of the order in Parkersburg, West Virginia. In 1978, Mary returned to Columbus, and accepted a position at The Columbus Dispatch, where she served for over thirty years until her retirement.
Mary was an active parishioner at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Columbus, Ohio, volunteering as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. She was devout in her faith, generous of heart, and was always willing to help someone in need. Mary Catherine will be remembered as a devoted aunt, sister, friend, and dog mom.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 13th , from 6 - 8 p.m. at Egan Ryan Funeral Home, 403 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, March 14 th at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Fr. Thomas Buffer, Celebrant, followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
