Leland Lloyd Mallett Obituary

Leland Lloyd Mallett, 83, of Columbus, OH, died on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at The James Cancer Hospital.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Kathleen “Kay” (McCort) Mallett; his daughter Teresa Dolan and her husband Patrick, of Worthington, OH; his daughter Diane Mallett-Birkitt, of Bristol, TN; his daughter Laura L. Mallett, of Blacklick, OH; his daughter Denise Mallett, of Hollywood, MD; his grandson Benjamin Birkitt and his fiancée Ashley Winslow, of Richmond, VA; his granddaughter Nadia Birkitt, of Bristol, TN; his granddaughter Elizabeth Varner, of Greensburg, PA; his grandson Ryan Mallett, of Hollywood, MD; and his cousin, Nancy Krueger, of Cleveland, OH. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Irene Mallett; his sister Ellen Robinson and her husband Harold; and his son-in-law Dr. Glenn H. Birkitt, Jr.

Lloyd graduated in 1958 from Summerfield High School, after which he attended the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology and subsequently became an instructor. In 1963, Lloyd married the love of his life, Kay, before being drafted into the Army. Following his time in the service, Lloyd went on to become a Certified Ohio State Welder and worked with the Ironworkers Local Union 549 as a welder and welding instructor until his retirement in 2000. Lloyd enjoyed a career defined by his work ethic and technical quality. He was respected in his trade, and his kind and light-hearted persona fostered quick friendships and mentorships with his coworkers.

Lloyd was a devout Catholic and loved his faith, modeling the true values of Christianity throughout his life and as an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a hard worker, the ultimate handyman, and a skilled gardener. He and Kay enjoyed retirement going on cruises, seeing new places, and taking their chances at the casino slot machines.  Lloyd was a jokester, a natural people-person, and a great listener and conversationalist. But most of all, Lloyd was the consummate family man and dedicated his life to providing love and support to Kay and their daughters and grandchildren, to whom he was their rock. Lloyd Mallett was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 1, 2024 at St. Mary’s Church in St. Clairsville, OH, followed by interment at St. Clairsville Union Cemetery.
