Larry Stewart Obituary

Charles Larry Stewart, age 89, passed away on July 9, 2021, in Columbus, Ohio. Larry, as he preferred to be called, was born on April 22, 1932, in Monroe, North Carolina to Bob and Nan (Schachner) Stewart. He was a loving husband and devoted father to six children. Larry was plant manager at MaLeck in Marshville, NC before creating the sales company C. Larry Stewart and Associates in Columbus, Ohio. After retirement, to keep busy, he drove a shuttle bus and worked in the parking garage at Riverside Methodist Hospital. One of his favorite places on Earth was Garden City Beach, South Carolina, where he enjoyed fishing and making memories with his children and eventually his grandchildren. He could also spend the afternoon listening to the ocean and watching the seagulls. He loved his tradition of spending Christmas week at the beach with his family. He was active in his North Carolina community. Larry was the fourth fire chief of the Wingate Volunteer Fire Department, deacon of the Wingate Baptist Church, a member of the Wingate Lion’s Club for many years and was once named Union County Father of the Year. In Columbus, he served as board president of the Columbus Gift Mart for one term. He enjoyed cooking, especially anything barbequed, which was always served with a side of his “Famous in the Family” coleslaw. He loved going to his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts. He was also a loyal Tarheel basketball fan. In his younger years, tennis and golf were his dominant sports. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, brothers Robert, Tom, and Richard, his former wives JoAnn (Lindsay) and Linda (Diehl-Stewart). He is survived by wife Darlene (Wagner-Stewart), children Debbie Hargett (Bill) of Marshville, NC, Chip Stewart (Kay), Jeannie Stewart of Wingate, NC, Rob Stewart (Michelle) of Matthews, NC, Chris Stewart of Marshville, NC, and Rich Stewart (Paula) of Columbus, OH, stepdaughters Jeanette Sonnenberg of Conroe, TX Caroline Bishop (Jeremy) of Hamilton, OH, and Joselyn Wagner of Westerville, OH, eighteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. A private celebration of life is planned for the near future. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Boystown at boystown.org.
