J. David Eberst, aged 83 of Columbus, Ohio died peacefully at home on June 18, 2026. Born in
Logan, Ohio, David is predeceased by parents John and Ruth Eberst, brother Larry Eberst, and
stepdaughter Deanna Hartley.
David is survived by spouse Jean Eberst, children J.V. Eberst (Sarah), Melinda Alumbaugh
(David), Walt Eberst, Jeramy Eberst (Jessica), stepson Mark Hartley, 12 grandchildren, and 5
great grandchildren.
David received a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame and a
Masters of Science degree from Ball State University in Molecular Biology. An avid Notre Dame
football fan, David and Jean watched games religiously and attended several on campus as
well.
David, a respected and admired science educator with a passion for chemistry, biology, and
physics was affectionately known as “Doc” at Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus.
There he taught the sciences as Science Department Head. David also taught at Columbus
State Community College, Franklin University, Dyersburg High School in Tennessee and Logan
High School.
David was an enthusiastic and successful golf coach at Bishop Watterson whose team
achievements include winning the 2004 Ohio state championship. David and Jean blended
their golf enthusiasm with many vacations centered around golf at destinations like Kiawah, SC
and Captiva, FL.
The Eberst family suggests donations in David’s memory may be made to Capital City
Hospice, who were instrumental in David’s end of life care..
Friends can visit with the family and help celebrate David’s life on Monday June 29, 2026 from
5-7 pm at Egan-Ryan Funeral Service Northwest Chapel, 4661 Kenny Rd, Columbus Ohio.
