John (Jack) Coontz, age 93, of Lancaster, died Wednesday January 16, 2019 at his residence at Carroll Place. He was born in Columbus, Ohio to Paden and Mary Hanrahan Coontz and grew up in Findlay, Ohio. John graduated from Findlay High School in 1943 followed by three years of service in the U.S. Army Air Corp and later in the Air Force Reserves attaining the rank of Captain. He then attended Findlay College graduating in 1950 and later received a Masters Degree in 1965 from The Ohio State University. John began his teaching career in Florida, Ohio later teaching at Marion Franklin High School in Columbus 1953-1971 and at Walnut Ridge High School 1971 until his retirement in 1986. John was a dedicated and loved teacher. During his career John received many awards among them “Outstanding Science Teacher” from the Ohio Academy of Science in 1961 and “Columbus Teacher of the Year” in 1966. He was chairman of the Central Ohio Science Fair in the 1960’s and the vice chairman of the Ohio State Science Fair from 1965-1969. John was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Dorothy (Dottie) in October 2018 and his son Joseph in 2010.
He is survived by his son, Timothy (Shirley) of Pataskala and grandchildren Brandon Scott (Michelle) Curry, Travis (Jutharat Suathim) Coontz, Tianna Goodwin, and Tristin (Yuriy) Yehorov. John is also survived by great-grandchildren Sydney Goodwin and Owen Yehorov. He was a member of St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Canal Winchester. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Arrangements being handled by EGAN-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 403 E. BROAD ST., Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, Canal Winchester on Monday January 21 at 12:00 Noon with visitation starting at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to a charity of your choice in his memory.
