Ida Meyer Obituary

Ida N. Meyer, née Wheaton, died in the presence of family on December 20th, 2020 in a private care home in Columbus, Ohio. Ninety years ago, on November 9, 1930, Ida Naomi was born in Detroit Michigan, but moved with her mother to her grandfather’s farm in Putnam County, Ohio, when she was twelve years old.  Her parents were the late Anna Myrtle (“Mirt”) Wheaton, née Harman, born in Putnam County, Ohio, at the ancestral Harman homestead, and the late Irwin Joy Wheaton, born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.  After graduating from Gilboa High School in 1948, on November 20, 1948, she married Carl Francis Meyer of Ottawa, who was at her side at her death with their two children, Susan Fillmore and Charles Meyer, and her eldest granddaughter, Elizabeth Fillmore.  In addition to being survived by Carl, Susan, Charles and Elizabeth, she is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Monika Voigt Meyer, and grandchildren Russell Fillmore, Kathryn Meyer, Emily Meyer and Laura Meyer.  She was very proud of what she and Carl had achieved in their married life.  Ida always put family first and loved them all for their own unique qualities and accomplishments.  Over her 90 years, Ida enjoyed dance, playing the piano, painting, playing bridge and pinochle, and watching the many animals that visited her, especially the birds, squirrels and chipmunks in the back yard, and in recent years, petting her grandchildren’s cats and playing dominoes with Carl.   She also had a life-long interest in genealogy – an interest that began more than 50 years ago and continued until about a month before her passing.  She was blessed to have a special relationship with her extended family that included David Landreman, Caitlin Graves and Robert Fillmore, and with her care assistant in the period leading to her death, Karen (“Kara” as she was known to Ida) Lanning.   She was preceded in death by Carl’s sister and husband Doris and Earl Gerdeman, and she is survived by Carl’s other sisters, Lorene Jettinghoff (Louis) and Marilyn Elsass (Gary).  She also leaves behind many other relatives, friends, and neighbors who will miss her dearly.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Agatha’s Church in Upper Arlington, Ohio, on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at 11:30 AM.  Prior to mass, there will be visitation in St. Agatha’s Church that begins at 10:30 AM.  That evening, there will be a second visitation at the Love Funeral Home, 405 E. Third St., Ottawa, Ohio, beginning at 6:00 PM.  Burial will take place on Wednesday, December 30th at 3 PM at the Harman Cemetery, Old State Route 224, Gilboa, Putnam County, Ohio.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of a donation in her memory to the Beyond Batten Disease Foundation, 3305 Steck Ave., Suite 200, Austin, TX 78757, or via the Foundation’s website: https://beyondbatten.org/be-project/be-a-donor/.
