George Michael Goodburn, age 73, passed away at home May 14, 2024. He is preceded in death by his son, George Justin Goodburn; a brother, Ned Goodburn; sister, Molly Jones; mother, Elizabeth Goodburn; father George L. Goodburn; aunt, Sr. Sharon Goodburn. Survived by ex-wife Cynthia Goodburn; children, Nate Goodburn, Rachael Goodburn, Jared (Erica) Goodburn and Noah (Kinnari) Goodburn; grandchildren, Haley Goodburn, Tyeson Edward George Buxton, Charlotte Goodburn; brothers Jerry (Mary) Goodburn, Bob (Kitty) Goodburn, Joe (Brigitte) Goodburn, John (Dawn) Goodburn; brother-in-law, Phil (Molly) Jones; sister-in-law, Janet (Ned) Goodburn, nieces, nephews and cousins.
George worked as a commercial roofer for many years with Goodburn Bros Roofing alongside his brothers, uncles, father and eventually with his own sons. For the last 7 years he has been working for The Board of Elections. He attended John Carroll University, and eventually graduated from The Ohio State University & Capital Law School. He loved to read, whether that was a book, his New York Times, The New Yorker or the Washington Post. Always keeping up to date on current events and never afraid to voice his opinion.
His passion for baseball was undeniable. He coached many years at St. Timothy and numerous traveling teams. He remembered every player that ever played for him, their strengths & weaknesses. He had the ability to push his players to do the best and be the best on and off the field. In his later years, he stopped coaching and began umpiring. He loved the sport, the people, the fields, all of it. Many of his players can remember being called things like “bub”, “knucklehead” and/or "sport". He was happiest on the fields and he genuinely cherished all the relationships he made throughout the years on the field.
One of his greatest accomplishments was his sobriety. He was always willing to help others struggling with substance abuse, never carrying any judgment. He created so many relationships over the years through AA, CA & Al-anon. George never knew a stranger, and a stranger never knew him. He loved to lend a helping hand to anyone willing to receive it.
George was a wonderful father to his four sons, George, Nate, Jared, Noah and daughter, Rachael. He always had a special place in his heart for his ex-wife Cindy, over the past couple years their relationship truly grew into something so kind and loving. He had such a soft spot in his heart for his grandchildren, Haley, Tyeson, Charlotte and soon to be grandson George. He enjoyed watching Haley play first base all throughout high school and into college. Tyeson & Charlotte he enjoyed taking them to the Goodie Shop for “Pops Cookies” (aka Oatmeal Raisin Cookies although he was not one to share his Cherry Pie). He truly enjoyed attending Tyeson’s football and basketball games. Always hoping one day he would be able to coach Tyeson. He was also genuinely looking forward to the birth of his newest grandson, George who is due in September.
George will always be remembered for his love for his family, his passion of sports, his opinions and most of all for his understanding and compassion for others. He will truly be missed by all.
