Frederick Armstrong Obituary

Frederick L. Armstrong, 80, of Grove City, Ohio, departed this life on May 3, 2024.

 The son of the late Wayne D. and Evelyn Mitchell Armstrong, he spent his childhood in the Bedford, Indiana area.  A 1961 graduate of Bedford High School, he then matriculated at Tri-State University (Trine University) graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1964. He received a Master of Science in Industrial Management from Central Michigan University in 1974. His final degree was a Master of Business Administration from Ohio University in 1984. He also attained proficiencies in other areas with a certification from Vickers Hydraulic School and a certification in Pneumatics Technology.

Fred had a long and varied career in industry, beginning as an Electrical Engineer at ARMCO Steel Corporation in Middletown, Ohio in 1964. He then joined the Corning Glass Works Corporation as an Industrial Engineer at the Bluffton, Indiana plant and then as an Engineering Manager at the Wellsboro, Pennsylvania plant. He joined RCA Corporation in Circleville, Ohio in 1970 where he developed and managed an equipment engineering group until becoming Plant Engineer. In 1984, he became the Plant Manager at the RCA Tube Plant in Juncos, Puerto Rico. He was also the Manufacturing Manager at the RCA Plant tube plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania before becoming the Plant Manager at the Marion, Indiana tube plant. In 1990 he became the Plant Manager at Circleville, Ohio Glass Operations. Fred spent the remainder of his career at the North American Tube Division of Thomson S.A. in Lancaster, Pennsylvania until his retirement in 2006.

Fred was also involved with the communities in which he lived. While in Middletown, Ohio he was a Youth Counselor at the Y.M.C.A. He was active with his sons in the YMCA Indian Guides Program. He also coached the Hill’s Implement and I.O.O.F. youth baseball teams, winning the regular season with Hill’s Implement and then became the coach for the All-Star Game which his team won.  Fred was also a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America (Scouts BSA). He was awarded the title of Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and the title of Sagamore of the Wabash by then Governor Evan Bayh. He was a member of the Saint Joseph Cathedral Parish in Columbus, Ohio.

He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, the former Rae Jean Ravellette, and two cherished sons, Gregory and his wife, Kelly (Redmond) and their four children, Katherine, Alexandra, Andrew and Geoffrey of Marysville, Ohio and Jarrod and his wife, Melissa (Harden) and their two sons, Benjamin and Samuel of Charlotte, North Carolina, his sister-in-law Yvonne St. Clair and many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and many treasured friends.

The funeral services with be conducted through the Egan-Ryan Funeral Home Broad Street location with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Cathedral, 212 E. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Vincennes, Indiana at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Cathedral, Memo: Back Door Ministry that feeds the homeless twice daily or the American Heart Association.
