Joining the OSU faculty in 1961, Dr. Zidonis rose to full professor in 1967. His research and writing lists publications dealing with improving secondary English curricula and writing skills in children. One federally funded project was "The Language of Children." In 1987, he was appointed chair of OSU's Department of Educational Theory and Practice. He held this post until retirement in 1994, with his emeritus title following in the same year.
Frank is survived by his wife of 64 years, Peg (McGinty), and his children: Frank, William (Bill), Anne Straub, and Kathy Dilenschneider. His grandchildren include Kellie, Amanda, and Abby in California; Ellen, Walter, and Eric in Florida; Francie in Columbus; and Ashley Hana in Japan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Louise Zidonis, and brothers, John and Joseph.
In retirement, he continued to golf (he scored two holes-in-one). He and Peg also traveled extensively, starting with a 51-day cruise around South America. Cruises also included four trips with their four children, their spouses, and eight grandchildren. Although they traveled far and wide, Spain was the favorite destination.
