Emily Meyer Obituary

Emily Susan Meyer died in the loving presence of her parents on February 10, 2024, in her family home in The Woodlands, Texas. Emily was born twenty-eight years ago on May 31, 1995, in The Woodlands, Texas. Although significantly challenged because of the ravages of Juvenile Batten Disease from which she suffered, Emily, in 2014, received her high school diploma from The Woodlands College Park High School, where she was an active member of the choir and Best Buddies. During her brief life, Emily loved dance, especially ballet and competitive Irish Dancing feiseanna, competing even when she became legally blind until her legs no longer would respond to her brain. Her taking the stage as a blind dancer was an inspiration to all in the audience who admired her determination and courage. She enjoyed singing in her school choirs, in her voice lessons and while attending the teen mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church with her family. Early in her life, before her Juvenile Batten Disease took away her fine motor skills, Emily took violin lessons, impressing her instructor with her perfect pitch. Emily also enjoyed the menagerie of family pets, which included guinea pigs, rats, rabbits, dogs, and a turtle, as well as two fish that Emily cleverly named “Sue” and “She” so that she could tell everyone that her family’s fish were named “Sushi.” Her love of animals extended beyond her family pets to creatures great and small, including horses, which she loved to ride, cattle that grazed on the green outside the family home when she lived in England, birds that visited the feeder outside her bedroom, and insects, crustaceans and mollusks, especially roly-poly doodlebugs, butterflies, and garden snails. When she was a pre-teen, she informed the veterinarian that she wanted to become a vet who was also an Irish Dance instructor. Indeed, Emily liked all of nature, and activities like raising sunflowers with her mom and attempting to grow avocado plants with her dad at home.

In addition to her parents, Monika Meyer, née Voigt, and Charles Meyer, Emily is survived by her sister Laura, her sister Kathryn, and her sister-in-law Caitlin (“Cait”) Graves, as well as her paternal grandfather, Carl Meyer, her aunts, Susan Fillmore and Renate Voigt, her uncle, Michael Voigt, her cousins Elizabeth (“Liz”) Fillmore, Russell (“Rus”) Fillmore and Andrew Voigt. Emily was pre-deceased by her maternal grandparents Rosemarie and Werner Voigt and her paternal grandmother, Ida Meyer. She also leaves behind many other relatives, friends, and neighbors who will miss her dearly. Throughout her life, Emily never knew any strangers, just friends she had not met yet.

A funeral Mass will be held in the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at the St. Anthony of Padua Church in The Woodlands, Texas, on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 2:00 PM, preceded by a visitation at the back of the Chapel at 1:00 PM, to which all who wish to pay their respects are invited. The Chapel is located at 8715 Kuykendahl Road, The Woodlands, Texas, 77382. Burial will take place on Saturday, February 24th, in the Union Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. For those that wish to make a donation In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests consideration of a donation in Emily Meyer’s memory to the Beyond Batten Disease Foundation, 3305 Steck Ave., Suite 200, Austin, TX 78757.
