Donald Henne Obituary

Donald R. Henne, 81, passed away on December 4, 2024. He was born on October 21, 1943, to the late Paul and Irene Henne. Don grew up in the Hilltop and was a proud graduate of St. Charles Preparatory School, Class of 1961. He furthered his education at The Ohio State University, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

A devoted educator and coach, Don spent many years as a teacher and athletic director at St. Charles Preparatory School, where he was deeply proud to contribute to the lives of countless students and athletes. His passion for teaching and coaching, and his belief in the power of education and athletics, were evident in all that he did. He dedicated much of his life to the development of young people, instilling in them not only skills on the field and in the classroom but also important values of discipline, respect, and perseverance. Don believed deeply in the potential of every student and athlete, and his encouragement and mentorship inspired many to achieve more than they thought possible. However, he will be most remembered by his students and colleagues as "Coach." His impact was profound, and his legacy of dedication, passion, and mentorship will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Above all, Don was known for his kind, loving, and caring nature. He had a remarkable ability to make people laugh and brighten any room with his sense of humor. Don never met a stranger—he treated everyone he encountered like an old friend. His genuine warmth and generosity made all who knew him feel valued and welcome. Whether offering encouragement, sharing a smile, or simply lending a listening ear, Don’s presence was a true gift to those around him.

Don was also fortunate to experience two great loves in his life: his late wife, Sue Henne, and his devoted wife, Marcia Henne, who brought him great joy and comfort in his later years.

Throughout his life, Don shared many cherished friendships with a special group of friends, who were integral to his journey. These friends include Charles “Doc” Mattingly, Mike Hackett, Ted Hummer, Bill Nye, Doug “Willie” Montgomery, Mike Arends, John “Mickey” MacKinnon, Rhett Plank, Sam Cook, and Gary Smitzer. Their camaraderie and support brought him joy and helped shape the man he was.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Irene Henne; his wife, Sue Henne; and his daughter, Sheryl Sidle. He is survived by his loving wife, Marcia Henne; his son, Todd (Lisa) Henne, Sr.; his grandchildren, Todd (Samantha) Henne, Jr., Sherry Henne, Jennifer Henne, Shannon Sidle, Adam Sidle, Richard Henne, and Ryne Henne; as well as 9 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Friends may call Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Egan-Ryan Funeral Home, 403 East Broad Street. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel on the grounds of St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 South High Street, with burial to follow.
