Charlotte Gerhardstein Obituary

Charlotte Gerhardstein (née Ebsen), age 68, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on March 25, 2024. Born on March 4, 1956, in Andernach-am-Rhein, Germany, she was a daughter to the late Erich and Auguste (Winder) Ebsen. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nicole, in 1998.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Natalie (Duncan) Gerhardstein of Luxembourg and Sonja (Brandon) Gerhardstein of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren Beatrice Autumn, Henry August and Alice Constanze; siblings Erich, Karl Heinz, Helmut, Roland, Norbert and Sonja; countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her ginger cat, Kleiner.

Having retired from the State of Ohio in 2022 after working there for over two decades, she had been looking forward to taking more road trips, visiting historical sites and the seaside, and spending time with her family and friends.

Charlotte, who grew up in Luxembourg and often recalled its natural beauty and her roots there, was always up for an adventure and a laugh. She loved painting, hiking and being outdoors. She had a knack for creating her own slices of paradise, whether in her garden or in her home, especially during holidays.

She had an intense compassion for those suffering, often putting aside her own needs for others. A deeply devout woman, St. Mary Catholic Church was the cornerstone through which she created roots for herself and, in turn, her children. She found much strength through God, the church and this community.

Her children will most remember her limitless generosity and empathy, her sense of humor and, most importantly, the intense sacrifices she made for them that went so far beyond the duties of any single mother. She instilled in them a love for travel and exploration, a hardworking ethic, and the ability to appreciate the small things in life.

Charlotte also loved her three grandchildren beyond measure, and it brought her great joy to spend time with them.

Family and friends may attend visitation hours at Egan-Ryan Central Chapel, 403 E. Broad St., in Columbus on Friday, April 5, 4-7pm, as well as the mass in her honor on Saturday, April 6, 10am, at St. Mary Catholic Church in German Village. The burial at Resurrection Cemetery will follow the service.
