Catherine Cecelia DeVine, lovingly known as Katie, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026, in Grove City, Ohio, at the age of 96. Katie (Meme to her grandkids) leaves a legacy marked by faith, resilience, humor, and an enduring love for her family.
Katie was born on June 26, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio, to Marie and Dennis McGrath, with a signature toughness she would display until her last breath.
Katie was preceded in death by her husband, John DeVine, her parents Dennis and Marie McGrath and her siblings John, Ellen (Bob), Alice (Todd), Dennis (Patsy), and Jimmy. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Abbruzzese, her son-in-law, Joseph, her granddaughters, Jordan Abbruzzese (Tobias), and Andrea Abbruzzese, along with nieces and nephews who will carry her memory forward with love and gratitude. Katie’s immediate family would like to extend a special thanks to Marybeth (Ric), Patty (Jim), Kay (Tom), Helen (Bill), and Ann (Chris) for their compassion and support.
Katie’s life began humbly and with a spirit that never wavered. She was a proud student of Holy Family High School, and served as a secretary for the City of Columbus for almost two decades. She married and moved to Centerburg, Ohio, and devoted herself to raising her daughter Mary and farm life. She retired from Morning View Care Center, after over 20 years working as a supervisor of housekeeping. There, she offered kindness and care to others in a setting where compassion matters deeply.
Katie was a devout Catholic whose faith shaped the way she loved her family and cared for each of her siblings at the end of their lives. She was a proud daughter of Irish immigrants and honored to have lived on the west side of Columbus for most of her life, rooted in the community that helped shape her.
Those who knew Katie will remember that she was funny, strong, and selfless. She never missed a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, whether she was dancing on tables at her brother’s bar The Lucky Leprechaun off West Broad Street in her younger years or doing the jig at Byrnes Pub in her late 80s.
Katie loved her family deeply, with her favorite stories involving childhood memories of playing baseball in the street or rollerskating. She enjoyed watching birds and listening to sports on the radio, dutifully following the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Bengals, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. She was surrounded by loving neighbors throughout the three decades she lived in Lincoln Village.
Katie’s journey reminds us that sacrifice is never wasted when it is offered in love. She gave of herself for her family, for her work, and for her faith. Katie persevered through the Great Depression, and worked as a woman who chose to get married and have a child in her late 30s in a time where such choices were uncommon. Her resiliency was marked in her final years, where she had her Last Rites read on three different occasions.
Now, Katie rests in the peace of the Lord, reunited with those who went before her. Her loved ones left behind will be comforted by her life of love, and her memory that will continue to be passed through generations.
Visitation for Katie DeVine will be on Friday, May 29th from 5pm until 7pm at Egan-Ryan Funeral Home at 403 E. Broad St. Columbus, OH 43215. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel, located on the grounds of St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 South High Street.
An Irish Blessing:
“May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.”
