Bruce Casto Obituary

Bruce Cordell Casto. 86, died July 18, 2020 after complications from a stroke in Columbus, Ohio. He was born October 18, 1933 in Dunbar, West Virginia. Bruce was preceded in death by his father Reverend William Casto, his mother Leona M. Baker Casto, his brothers Bill of West Milford, WV,Larusof Poca, WV and his sister Virginia M. Beatty of Buffalo Grove, IL.  He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Doris Walls Casto, his children Kristi Gray (Kip), Dawn Casto (Andy Thompson) and Dirk (David Prado), and many cherished nieces and nephews and extended family.

A graduate of Unidis High School in West Milford, West Virginia, he went on to become an accomplished scholar and scientist with a B.S. degree from Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston, W.V.), an M.S. degree from the Ohio State University and a Sc.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health.

He began his professional career in 1966 at the American Medical Association (A.M.A.), Chicago, Illinois and served as a research scientist, teacher and guest lecturer at many renowned institutions in the United States and abroad (Germany, Canada et. al.)   The numerous scientific articles and book chapters that he authored or co-authored,some in cancer research, represent a distinguished and enduring achievement in scholarly investigation at the institutions where he pursued his scientific interests.

As for his life-long personal interests, he was an avid tennis player and spectator, and enjoyed singing in the church choir and at weddings.

He retired from the Ohio State University School of Public Health in 2010.  Thereafter he enjoyed mentoring graduate students at the University, spending time with family and friends, traveling to West Virginia for family reunions and attending the Columbus Symphony. The symphony was especially enjoyable to him because of his love of music and singing.
