Thomas W. Applegate, Jr. died February 4, 2018 at the age of 66. He was born on September 20, 1951 to the late Vivian (White) and Thomas Applegate. Tom graduated from Bishop Ready High School and attended Xavier University, Otterbein College and The Ohio State University. While working security at the construction of what was to be a nuclear power plant in Moscow, Ohio in the early 1980’s, Tom was a “whistleblower” to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, exposing defects in construction that ultimately resulted in the project’s cancellation. Tom was a talented singer in his younger years, the star of numerous high school musicals. Despite his own life long battle with mental illness, Tom was a tireless advocate for others suffering from mental health issues. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his uncle, Msgr. Bennett Applegate, and nephew, Andrew. Survived by siblings Patricia (Lou), Barbara, Peggy (Robert), Theresa, Martha, Susan (Brian), Ben (Sheila), Mary (Ed) and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Friday February 9, 2018 from 9:00 – 10:00a.m. at EGAN-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 403 E. BROAD ST. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel, 6440 S. High St. with interment following at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or the Andrew Applegate Foundation (1250 S. Michigan Ave., #2802, Chicago, IL 60605).
