Welcome to the memorial page for

Joseph E. Theibert

February 9, 1948 ~ April 3, 2017 (age 69) 69 Years Old

Joseph E Theibert, born February 9, 1948 and died April 3, 2017.

“A day is what you make it”- one of Joe Theibert’s ‘rules of life’ and the one rule that he was actually willing to follow! Joe made the most of every day he was given, and those who knew him were richer for it.

Born one of 12 children to Fergus and Mary Louise Theibert, Joe grew up in Bexley among a large loving family and childhood friends who were with him until the end. He graduated from Bexley High School, and attended the Ohio State University. After a stint in San Francisco, Joe returned to Columbus where he was one of the pioneers of the Short North Arts District and a founding organizer of the Doo Dah Parade.

From his barstool ‘office’ at the Short North Tavern, Joe never met a stranger, and he shared his wit and wisdom with generations of Tavern regulars who remember him fondly and will miss him dearly. He was a member of the 4S Club in German Village, and a one-time President of the Lion’s Club.  He was an avid golfer and reader and a fan of all sports, notably his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes.

Joe was famous for being a Lottery winner, and he always said ‘I won the Lottery twice, first in 1986 and again when I met Suzanne.’  His loving and ever patient wife Suzanne Cotton survives him, as do his sisters, Andrea (Tom) Perkins, Charlotte, Julie Seiple, Michelle (Sean) Kennedy, and Judy (Kevin) Readey. He is also survived by brothers Fergus (Margaret), Thom (Karen), Paul, Robert and Gene (Terri). He leaves behind a multitude of nieces and nephews and innumerable friends, including lifelong co-conspirators Louie Seidensticker and David Herwald. He was preceded in death by brother Philip, and lifelong friend Greg Carr.

The family will receive friends Thursday 4-7 p.m. at EGAN-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 403 E. BROAD ST. where the Funeral Service will be Friday 11:00 a.m.  Private burial later.  A celebration of life will follow at the Short North Tavern. Friends who wish may contribute to the charity of their choice.
