John F. (Jack) Gibbons, Sr., age 77, Tuesday November 13, 2018. Born Sept. 13, 1941 in Lakewood, Ohio. A graduate of St. Clement grade school (1955), St. Ignatius High School (1959) and the University of Notre Dame (1963). Jack served in the U.S. Marine Corps before entering the computer industry with IBM.
Preceded in death by his parents Thomas M. and Rosemary C. Gibbons, brother Thomas and daughter Erin Elizabeth Gibbons.
Survived by his faithful and devoted wife of 56 years Kathleen (Kay) Gibbons; beloved children Jack, Jr. (Brenda), Sheila (Todd Kays), Kathleen M., Brian (Tiffany) and Michael (Erin) of Chicago, Il.; grandchildren Alex, Nicholas, Caroline, Matthew, Katherine, Peter, Andrew, Claire, Madeleine and Luke; sister Mary Clare Kelley and brother Patrick Gibbons.
Jack and his wife Kay served as Lay Co-Chairs of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal for five years. Pope John Paul II awarded them the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifica Medal for extraordinary contributions to the Catholic Community. Jack became a Knight of Malta in 1994 in the Federal Association, Washington, DC and was also a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. He was a founding member and also served as chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Columbus Catholic Foundation. In 1984 he was appointed to the University of Notre Dame’s Hesburgh Library Council on which he served until his death.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday 11:30 a.m. at St. Brigid of Kildare Church, 7179 Avery Rd., Dublin, Ohio where friends will be received at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will be on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. In lieu of flowers friends who wish may contribute to the National Christ Child Society, 6110 Executive Blvd. Suite 504, Rockville, Md. 30852, The Women’s Care Center of Columbus, 935 E.
