Janez (John) Zupan, age 88, died at home on October 10, 2018. He was born in Jesenice, Slovenia, on February 14, 1930. In search of freedom, Janez left his enslaved homeland, communist Yugoslavia, and came by way of Austria to the United States. He went first to Rochester, New York, and then to Columbus, Ohio. He retired from Chemical Abstracts Service after 31 years as a Senior Scientific Information analyst.
Janex loved his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, singing, playing the accordion, and reading poetry and other meaningful works of literature. He also cherished his Catholic faith.
Janez was preceded in death by his beloved son, Dr. Andrew Zupan; his sisters, Ljudmila (Milka) Sustar and Vera Lapajne; sisters-in-law MajdaZupan, Nikolina Mocnik, Judita Mocnik and Sandra Mocnik; and brothers-in-law Dolfi Mocnik, Silvo Mocnik, Vlado Mocnik, Peter Sustar, Ljubo Lapajne and Lojze Stare. He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Maria (Mara Mocnik); son, Dr. Mark Zupan (Dr. Mary Gail Mercurio); daughter-in-law, Lori Zupan; five grandchildren, William, Walker, Sydney, Matthew and Caroline; brothers Joze Zupan, Riko Zupan (Marija);sister Mojca Stare; and many dear nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and friends, in Canada, Italy, Slovenia, and the United States.
A Mass of Christian Burial will occur on a later date. Donations in memory of Janez Zupan may be made to St. Timothy Church/School, Ohio Health Hospice or a charity of your choice.
