The last of his generation slips beyond the golden strand . . .
UNCLE JIM
He arrived on earth in '35
The youngest of the brood
Like his father before him
He loved the feel
Of a freshly sanded wood.
Time goes by
I'm sure he remembered
The day Pearl Harbor was hit
And he watched as his brothers went off to do
Their patriotic bit.
His father had fought in World War One
And perhaps it shaped his interests
For he loved to draw historical scenes
With a gift from the Giver of Gifts.
He became a crafter for those who needed
A place to shelter their dreams
And when he was finished with building
You know how good it seems
To have crafted a thing of beauty
And a place for the homefire burning
There's joy in the workman's hands and heart
For it's life that delivers the learning.
I remember the last time I saw him
With my son; we had such a good talk
And I saw a generational magic
As they both got to know one another.
For my Uncle was just a good guy
A pleasure to be around
I look forward to seeing you once again
When I leave this mortal ground.
