Dominican Sister of Peace, Sister Juliana D'Amato, died at Mohun Health Care
Center, Columbus, OH, on Monday, February 20.  She was born in Matrice,
province of Campobasso, Italy.  She immigrated to the United States in 1940
and lived in Youngstown, OH until she entered St. Mary of the Springs
College (now Ohio Dominican University) in 1949.  She was professed in 1952
in the former congregation of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican
Sisters of Peace.

She taught in elementary schools in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and at Christ
the King in Columbus, OH.  After teaching a year at St. Mary High School in
New Haven, CT, she spent a year at the University of Florence where she
studied art history and Italian literature.  Middlebury College awarded her
a Master of Arts degree in Italian.  She earned her PhD in Italian
Literature at Yale, subsequently teaching at the Catholic University of
America and at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT for 35 years.  For
several summers she taught Renaissance Art History and Italian at Providence
College in Italy.

Before leaving Albertus, Sr. Juliana attended St. Michael's College in
Vermont for graduate work in theology and pastoral ministry.  She served as
pastoral minister at St. Margaret of Cortona parish in Columbus, OH for
eight years.  Sr. Juliana worked for her Dominican congregation in Rome and
then became secretary of the Transition Team that coordinated the union of
seven Dominican congregations into the Dominican Sisters of Peace.  She was
on the Continuing Formation Mentor Team for the Dominican Sisters of Peace
Associates Program and volunteered as translator for the office of Dominican
Sisters International in Rome.

Sr. Juliana was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Giulia Maria
D'Amato, and her sisters Mary (Thomas) Motosko and Nilde (Robert) Wolf.  She
is survived by her sister Vittoria D'Amato, many nieces and nephews, and
their children.

Office of the Dead will be prayed at the Columbus Motherhouse on Friday,
February 24 at 5:10 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held there on
Saturday, February 25 at 9:00 a.m. followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery
by Egan-Ryan Funeral Home, 403 East Broad Street.  Memorial gifts in Sr.
