Richard Joseph Ryan

December 23, 1932 ~ June 24, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Richard J. "Dick" Ryan, 84, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on June 24,2017, peacefully at Westminster Thurber with family at his side. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary Alma (Miller) Ryan and his siblings Thomas Ryan, Jr. and Martha Foy. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Fran (Lottridge) Ryan: their five children, Rick (Kathy), Terry (Trish), Ted (Catherine), Mary Kay Fenlon (Kevin), and Tom, 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dick graduated from St. Charles Preparatory High School in 1951 and studied at the University of Notre Dame and The Ohio State University. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic stationed in Germany and later managed his father's pharmacies. Dick also followed his father's footsteps into politics and served as president of the Ohio and Franklin County Young Democrats and was a delegate to multiple Democratic National Conventions. During his 34 years in public service he was a bailiff for the Franklin County Probate Court, Chairman of the Franklin County Board of Elections, Deputy Franklin County Recorder, Assistant District Manager for the U.S. Census Bureau and purchasing agent for the Auditor of the State of Ohio. Always involved in his community, Dick was a founding member of St. Anthony Parish and president of its Men's Club, president of the Forest Park Civic Association, member of The Shamrock Club and an elected member of the Democratic Central Committee and served as its executive director. Dick and Fran loved animals and adopted several West Highland Terriers and loved to travel, especially cruising. Dick was an avid golfer and member of philatelic clubs. Friends may call 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the EGAN-RYAN FUNERAL HOME 403 E. Broad St.  Rosary 7 p.m  Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Church 1300 Urban Dr.  Burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers friends who wish may contribute in his memory to St. Anthony Church or the St. Mary Church Restoration Fund 684 S. Third St. Columbus, OH 43206.
