Kevin Thomas Gorey

Kevin Thomas Gorey, age 80, passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2015 at Kobacker House. Preceded in death by, parents Gertrude O’Connor and Andrew Joseph Gorey, brother Andrew Joseph Gorey, Jr., and wife Diane Parker Gorey. Survived by his children, Kelly (Timothy) Friar, Caroline (Mauricio) Gorey-Yepez, Kevin T. Gorey, Jr., and first wife, Dora West Laywell, grandchildren Kayla Elizabeth Cain, Mariah Mae Cain, Leah Louise Gorey and great grandson Braylen William Nettles, step-children Susan Yates-Brown, David Yates, Lisa Moriarty, Cara Anderson, Christopher Yates, Kim Yates and Scott Yates; siblings Robert Gorey, Brenda Garvin, Marcia Paiva, sister-in-law Marjorie Healey Gorey, and many beloved nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren, dear friends and caregivers. Kevin served as Superintendent of Lands and Buildings for the City of Columbus from 1971-1984, and retired from Port Columbus International Airport in 2004.  He also owned and managed several businesses including the C & M Market, Columbus Polygraph, and The Mohawk Grill, Columbus, Ohio. Kevin was stationed at Loring Air Force Base, MN, 1957-1958, and was recalled to active duty during the Cuban missile crisis to Richard-Gebaur Air Force Base, MO, where he was honored to guard Air Force One during President John F. Kennedy’s visit. Kevin graduated from Dorchester High School, Boston, MA, 1954. He attended The Ohio State University and played defensive right wing for the undefeated 1959 state champion Ohio State University Hockey Team. He graduated from Otterbein University, Westerville, OH, Business Administration, 1964 and attended Capital University Law School. He served as President, 1978-1979, and Lt. Governor, 1981-1982, of Eastern Kiwanis, Columbus, Ohio, District 10-S. He was a member of the Shamrock Club and served as honorary “Keeper of the Rock”, the Blarney Stone, during the St. Patrick’s Day Parades. He dearly loved his family and sought to serve his community by sponsoring and assisting refugee families relocating in central Ohio. He loved the ocean, having gown-up on Cape Cod, and spent many happy summers at his aunt and uncle’s cottage in East Dennis, and vacationed on Governor’s Island, Lake Winnipesauke, NH. An excellent golfer, his team won the 1978 Borden Classic Pro-am at Riviera Country Club, Dublin Ohio, when the LPGA pro, JoAnne Carner, shot a hole-in-one. Arrangements are being handled by Egan-Ryan Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 am Saturday, November 21, 2015, at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel in St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S. High Street, Lockbourne, Ohio 43717. Donations in his honor may be made to Mayfair Village Nursing and Rehab Center Resident Activity Fund.
