Jon Joseph Altman

February 20, 1931 ~ June 25, 2016 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Jon Joseph Altman, surrounded and supported by many of his children and grandchildren, passed away peacefully on June 25th, 2016.  Jon was born in Columbus on February 20th, 1931. He graduated from John Carroll University in 1953, and then served in the armed services before marrying the love of his life, Mildred Irene Wellnitz on June 16, 1956. Jon spent much of his life in service to and in giving back to others. He was one of the founding members of the Joint Organization for Inner City Needs (J.O.I.N.) and was chairman of the advisory committee for 40 years. He was co-chair of the Hartley and Christ the King festival committees for many years. He was a lector and eucharistic minister at Christ the King, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Serra Club, and the Holy Sepulchre.  Jon received the Catholic Man of the Year award in 1996.  Jon is responsible for many fine commercial buildings in central Ohio due to his life long career in construction with the Altman Company where he served as president for many years. He will be forever missed and loved by his family and many friends. Jon is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mildred Irene Wellnitz, his parents Norman J. and Nettie Mae
Altman, by his brother, Norman Altman and by his sisters, Dorothy Gordon and Janice Briley. Jon is survived by his brother James (Joellen) Altman and his brother-in-law Clayton Briley. He is also survived by his daughters Catherine (Robert) Jones, Teresa (Thomas) Ozarzak, Christina Kaiser, Angela (David) Parker and his sons Joseph (Melissa) Altman and Norman (Robin) Altman. He is survived by his grandchildren Brittany and Zackary Altman, Nicholas, Hailey and Jared Ozarzak, Andrew, Thomas, William and Maureen Kaiser, Christina, Benjamin and Amy Parker, Julia and Samantha Altman, Caroline and Cameron Connell, Ann (Brian) Malich, Aline (Tyler) Kazee and Andrea Altman. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Dominic, Alex, Christopher, Rebecca, Nathan and Cal Malich and Sullivan, Harrison, Sebastian, Beckett and Gabrielle Kazee.  Friends may call at the Egan-Ryan Funeral Home located at  403 East Broad Street on July 6th from 5-7 pm and on July 7th from 4-7:30 pm. where a Rosary will begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by a time for friends and family to share memories of Jon.  The Funeral Mass will be on Friday, July 8th at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Church at 2777 East Livingston Avenue. The burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to J.O.I.N. 578 East Main St. Columbus 43215.
