Alberta (Sorenson) Lindstrom

December 29, 1917 ~ April 5, 2017 (age 99) 99 Years Old

Alberta Kathleen Lindstrom (Betty) passed away on April 5, 2017.  She was born in Manistee, Michigan, to Albert and Alberta (Vlach) Sorenson.  After graduating as salutatorian of her Manistee High School class, Betty attended the University of Michigan where she followed her undergraduate degree with two years of graduate credit from the U of M Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Betty was initially employed at the Manistee County Bureau of Social Aid after which she held the position of Child Welfare Worker of Emmet County and then Washtenau County in Michigan.

Following her marriage to Clarence G. Lindstrom (Kelly) in New Orleans, Louisiana, they lived in Merida Yucatan, Mexico.  They then moved to Lafayette, Louisiana, where she was Assistant Society Editor for the Lafayette Daily Advisor.  They then moved to Houston, Texas, where she earned the rank as a nationally accredited flower show judge.  She served on the board of the Houston Federation of Garden Clubs.

On moving to Upper Arlington, Ohio, Betty was employed as a Chief Claims Examiner for the Social Security Disability Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation in Ohio. Following the death of her husband Kelly, Betty was the founder of the Central Ohio Parkinson Society.  She served as president and editor of their monthly newsletter and was a support group facilitator for fifteen years. With others, Betty founded The Ohio Parkinson Foundation serving as president for twelve years.  She also served on the board of The Upper Arlington Commission on Aging and The Upper Arlington Senior Center Board.  She was a volunteer as a friend of the Upper Arlington Library.

Betty served as elder in the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Upper Arlington.  She was a frequent contributor of poetry and articles to the Columbus Citizens Journal.  In Michigan, Betty was a member of the Manistee Art Institute and an associate member of the Manistee First Congregational Church.  For years she spent part of each summer at her property on 6th Avenue in Manistee.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sisters, Elaine Karmann, Marie Jane (Jach) Neifert, and her brother Allan R. Sorenson.  Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee, Michigan.

Betty leaves behind many family members and friends who loved her very much.
